There is a very charming appeal to this home from the exterior through the interior that encompasses the sweat, rustic spirit of the primitive period. But that aura stopped short of the kitchen. The beautifully weathered pine floors, cast iron pots, candles, and lanterns that were adorning the rest of the home served as the inspiration for the kitchen design.
The first task at hand is always to create more function. The range was tightly packed between the refrigerator and the corner leaving very little room for prep and the base cabinets offered minimal storage. By moving the refrigerator across the kitchen, we were able to center the range and put a fully accessible cabinet in the corner and build sizeable island with lots of organization.
This kitchen is filled with gorgeous antique pieces and an original pioneer look, but it isn’t a museum. Our strategy for finish selections was to find materials and finishes that mimicked what was used in the 1800’s but mix them with modern products. Custom cabinets were designed with all the greatest bells and whistles, but we opted for a weathered finish that made the cabinets fit in with the rest of the home. Brick backsplash and the beat-up, oak island top took the center stage while the plain modern quartz lay muted in the background. Lastly, a mixed wood vinyl plank picked up the golden hues of the pine flooring in the rest of the home but gave the rustic, homestead vibe that was strewn through the rest of this gorgeous home.
This homestead beauty is a work of art. The black cabinets make for an amazing foundation allowing the natural elements to stand out dramatically. All of the homeowner’s finishing touches make the kitchen beautiful without being too fragile for use!
