This historic home had been very well taken care of structurally, but an addition that was added before the current homeowners bought the house needed to be reworked–structurally and functionally.
We took the homeowners’ wish list and tackled the layout issues head-on! Excitingly, we were able to recreate the layout checking off everything on list without demolishing the original integrity of this beautiful home!
The Kitchen
Historic homes rarely have big kitchens. This kitchen was no exception. Without natural light or the ability to open up walls, we had to rely on light colors, a better lighting scheme, and textures and finishes that reflect the home owner’s antique style.
With the lack of natural light, choosing a bright palette for all the heavy elements was a must. The cabinets were painted in a light tan that was picked up beautifully in the veining of the quartz countertops. The backsplash tile mimics an old-world style tin to stay in tune with the age of the home and the antique furniture pieces the homeowners already had that reflected their style. We set it off with navy walls that invited the victorian time period back into the home.
Laundry Room
While the kitchen was one concern, the real challenge was finding enough space for the dryer on the main level. For these homeowners, having necessary storage and amenities close at hand was crucial!
We revamped the laundry area by extending it into the living room and relocating the half bath. Not only is the dryer now on the main level but we added storage and a bench with hooks for more functionality.
Living Room
The first issue that needed tackled was the sinking foundation. Ensuring the home was structurally sound was crucial, otherwise, all the other plans we made would have eventually failed. After the foundation was remedied, the walls were framed, drywall was hung, and we moved in with all of our beautifully coordinated finishes. — Great job Hoffman Builders!
By changing the laundry room layout, we were able to widen the narrow pass thru to the TV area! Now, there’s a cozy dining and living space perfect for hosting.
In historic homes, finding that sweet spot between old charm and new convenience is essential. By selecting modern cabinets and appliances that enhance the home’s character, you get the best of both worlds. Plus, when you love your home, maintaining its character comes naturally — And it certainly showed at the completion of this project!
