This large, open kitchen had been well-loved, well-used, and worn out! The island was too small, far from functional, and was used mainly as a dumping ground for bags, coats, and everyday items. All the appliances on one wall prevented any space for prep. And to top it all off, the colors and finishes were well beyond their best by date.
The Design
Always first on my list is function. The kitchen area was very spacious so there was no need to leave all the appliances crammed on one wall. In order to create a work triangle, we moved the sink to the island which left plenty of space to center the range between the door and window and left ample space for meal prep or making a simple cup of coffee. With tons of available floor space, we expanded the island to house the sink, dishwasher, double trash and plenty more storage.
The Palette
Green has been a trending color this year, particularly Sherwin William’s Sea Salt. This restful and relaxing hue dressed the walls and was picked up in the tile backsplash and countertops. The monochromatic theme created a very simplistic and harmonious design but was contrasted by a revived honey oak island. Opposite the color wheel from green and a necessary warm component in the design the honey wood finish also kept the kitchen in line with the age of the home.
While quartz countertops may have a few perks, natural stone surfaces will always be my favorite. Granite and marble are pulled straight from the earth, sliced like a loaf of bread, and then polished. Each slab is original. This particular stone, called fantasy brown is a dolomite, which is a fancy word for hard marble. Its beauty cannot by manufactured by man.
This design is classic and will be loved for years to come! It’s colorful enough to keep the homeowners happy and neutral enough to change decor with the seasons and trends.
