This teeny, tiny, outdated kitchen needed to become a bit more flavorful! No style and lack of counterspace meant no fun for a person who loves to cook. So the first step was to empty the space and open it up to give a little more storage and a lot more traffic flow and prep space.
The small u-shaped kitchen wasn’t comfortable for enough for more than one person at a time. Even keeping the cook company was difficult with the cabinets hanging over the peninsula. By opening up a wall we gained the space we needed to put in an island and shortening the doorway to their backroom gained us space to add cabinetry. We were also able relocate the refrigerator to keep a work triangle.
Since the space is still small, we matched the wall color (Sherwin Williams Pure White) to the cabinetry color to give the illusion of a larger space. We also widened the window over the sink to flood the kitchen with natural light from their sunroom.
The kitchen was spiced up with the homeowner’s granite selection. The drama and beauty in this slab quickly became the focal point of the kitchen so we chose a solid color subway tile with a modern wave for the backsplash (Marazzi Middleton Square steeple gray).
We used a vinyl tile on the floor to contrast the wood in the adjoining family room. Coretec flooring is waterproof and scratch resistant making it pet friendly and a great choice for kitchens. This color, chords, has low variation and is light for easy maintenance.
The bland, outdated space that was once a pass thru for this family and their guests is now a relishing space where family and friends want to pull up a stool to chat or enjoy a savory meal!
